大蔵山について

大蔵山スタジオが本社を構える大蔵山は、宮城県南部の阿武隈山系北端に位置する標高300mほどの里山です。

今から約100年前、弊社初代・山田長蔵が伊達冠石の採掘を開始すると、多くの地元の方々が農業や林業のかたわら、採石業に従事しました。第二次大戦後、高度経済成長に伴い、石積み工事や墓石材などに使われた伊達冠石でしたが、その唯一無二の表情が彫刻家やアーティストに注目され、次第に彫刻作品やモニュメントに加工されるようになりました。

4代目の山田政博は家業を継ぐと、大蔵山の整備・緑化事業に着手。同時に、地元の木や土を使って文化施設を徐々に建てていきます。ここには、もう一度人々が集う豊かな里山の風景をつくろうという山田政博の気持ちが込められています。

現代表であり5代目の山田能資は、大蔵山の自然に寄り添いながら、山の命を次世代へ伝えることを企業活動の要と致しました。

About Mt. Okurayama

Mt. Okurayama, where our head office stands, is a satoyama (highland village) area located roughly 300 meter above sea level at the northern tip of the Abukuma mountain range in southern Miyagi Prefecture.

About 100 years ago, when the founder of our company, Chozo Yamada, began to quarry Daté Kan Stone, many of the local people were also engaged in the quarrying as a sideline to their farming or forestry activities. After the Second World War, as rapid economic growth took place, Daté Kan Stone was used as masonry stone or for tombstones, but once the peerless beauty of its polished face was noted by sculptors and artists, Daté Kan Stone gradually came to be used to produce sculptures and monuments.

When the fourth-generation, Masahiro Yamada, took over the family business, he began work to improve and afforest Mt. Okurayama. At the same time, by using local wood and earth, he has built cultural facilities. These are imbued with Masahiro’s passion to create an abundant satoyama-like landscape where people can once again gather.

While nurturing the natural surroundings of Mt. Okurayama, and by placing the transmission of the life of the mountain to the next generation at the center of the company’s vision, The current fifth - generation company representative, Takasuke Yamada has focused the company’s business on the quarrying, and processing, of Daté Kan Stone through the mission.

伊達冠石とは

伊達冠石は、2000万年前に生成された両輝石玄武岩質安山岩に分類される玄武岩溶岩・火成岩です。鉄分を多く含むため比重が大きく、見た目よりも重量を感じるかもしれません。また非常に石目が詰まっているため、水分を含みにくく、磨きによって美しい光沢が出るのも特徴のひとつです。

大蔵山では伊達冠石が柱状節理の形状で地表に現れているところや、丸く風化しているなど、さまざまな状態の原石を見ることができます。柱状節理とは、マグマが冷え固まる際の収縮によって、冷却面に割れ目が生じ、その割れ目が内部に垂直に伸びている状態のこと。地質学者によれば、大蔵山は2000万年の間、海底に2度沈降しているといわれ、水分や空気がこの割れ目に入り込んだことで、独特の錆色があらわれたと考えられています。

伊達冠石のもっとも大きな特徴は、表面と内部の表情が全く異なること。表面は黄土色を呈しているかと思えば、あるものは鉄錆色をしていたり備前焼の火襷のような錆色が入っていたり。ひとつとして同じ表情はありません。対して中は一様に黒灰色を呈し、年月とともに鉄錆色が少しずつ強まるなど経年変化していきます。また、節理に沿って石を伐り出すため、原石が彫刻的な形状を呈していることも、その存在感を際立たせています。

この唯一無二の表情に創造力を刺激された国内外の建築家、アーティスト、デザイナーの方々が、記憶に残る作品や場として伊達冠石を採用しております。

What is Daté Kan Stone?

Daté Kan Stone is a kind of basalt / igneous rock, scientifically classified as two-pyroxene basaltic andesite, that was formed 20 million years ago. As the stone contains large amounts of iron, it has a high specific gravity and perhaps feels heavier than it looks. The stone also has a very fine grain and takes up little moisture, and therefore one of its characteristics is that polishing results in a beautiful sheen.

At Mt. Okurayama, Daté Kan Stone ore can be seen in various forms, such as places where the stone appears above the surface of the ground in the form of columnar joints, or as rounded boulders that have been eroded by the elements. Columnar joints are formed by the contraction that takes place when magma cools and hardens, which causes a fissure to develop at the surface that extends perpendicularly inside the stone. According to geologists, Mt. Okurayama has sunk to the seabed twice over a period of 20 million years. It is thought that the distinctive rust-color of Daté Kan Stone appeared due to moisture and air penetrating the fissures.

The most important characteristic of Daté Kan Stone is that the surface appearance is distinct from stone to stone and also completely different from the inside of the stone. While some stones have an ocher-like surface, others are rust-colored, having a reddish-brown color reminiscent of the Bizen ware reddish fire mark. No two Daté Kan Stones have the same colorings. In contrast, the interior of the stone exhibits a uniform charcoal color that gradually becomes more rust-colored with age. Since the stone is hewn out along the joints, the fact that the ore has a sculpture-like form also helps to accentuate its sense of presence.

Architects, artists, and designers, both at home and overseas, whose creativity has been stimulated by the peerless beauty of its appearance, have honored us by using Daté Kan Stone in artworks or edifices that long remain in the memory.

山に命を返す営み

採石業は、人の手で大きく自然環境を変化させてしまう行為でもあります。特に1960年代以降、大型重機が開発され、よりスピーディーに、より多くの石の採掘が可能になりました。4代目・山田政博は学生時代を過ごした東京で、日本の環境が大きく変化していることを目の当たりにします。家業を継ぐために戻った大蔵山でも同様の景色が広がっていることに疑問を感じ、1980年代より彫刻家やアーティストたちのアドバイスを受けながら、荒涼とした大地を緑に戻すために植樹する、山の修景作業に着手することにしました。

火山活動など地球のダイナミックな胎動によって生まれた山。そこから採れる石は山の命そのものです。山田政博は“石は山からいただく恵み”という感謝の気持ちのもと、植樹と同時にその当時採石した石の中でも特に大きく力のあるものを山に立てることにしたのです。石畳の「時の道」、「石舞台野外劇場」、「山堂サロン」、そして「山堂駐車場」。国内外の彫刻家やアーティストたちと行った一連の協働制作を「ワークキャンプ」と命名し、2015年までに4回開催しています。また、石積みの壁を中心として、地元産の石や木を用いた山堂サロン、石や山に関する文献をアーカイブした六角堂書庫を建てたほか、2016年末には最大級の4〜5mの対の伊達冠石を中心とした「現代イワクラ」を完成させました。

山田政博が手がけた山に命を返す営みは、太古の人々が石に抱いていた潜在的な感性を現代の私たちの中に呼び覚まし、人間は自然に寄り添う存在であることに気づく場として、大蔵山の魅力を再発見するきっかけになっています。

An endeavor to give life back to the mountain

Quarrying is an act by which the human hand causes great changes to the natural environment. Especially since the 1960s, large-scale machinery has been developed that makes it possible to extract larger amounts of stone more rapidly than ever before. The fourth-generation executive advisor, Masahiro Yamada, saw with his very own eyes during the years he spent in Tokyo as a student the huge changes forced upon Japan’s environment. After his return to Mt. Okurayama to take over the family business, he felt misgivings about the similar landscapes he saw there. From the 1980s, advised by sculptors and artists, he began the task of restoring the mountain landscape through reforestation to bring green hues back to the bleak terrain.

The mountain was born from the dynamic fetal-like stirrings of the earth, such as volcanic activity, so the stone that is hewn from the mountain is the very life of the mountain itself. Masahiro Yamada, based on his feelings of gratitude for the blessings the mountain has bestowed, in addition to proceeding with the reforestation, began to make use of the most unique stones that have especially captured the great power of the mountain. These projects include “Pavement (Time and Space),” the “Open-air Theatre,” “Yamado salon,” and the “Yamado Parking.” A series of collaborative production events with both Japanese and overseas sculptors and artists under the name “Creative Camp” have been held four times, with the latest held in 2015. In addition to constructing the Yamado Salon with its stone walls at the center made using locally produced stone and wood, and the Rokkaku-Do hexagonal library that archives literature on stone and mountains, the Modern Iwakura, which has a pair of the largest possible Daté Kan Stones, four to five meters in height, as its focal point, was completed at the end of 2016.

The endeavor to give life back to the mountain that Masahiro has set out on, reawakens in us, the people of the contemporary age, the latent sensibilities held by ancient people toward stone. Moreover, by providing a space that aids the realization that humans can only exist in the embrace of nature, he has given us an opportunity to rediscover the allure of Mt. Okurayama.

文化施設

大蔵山にはデザインとコンセプトにおいてほかには見られない非常にユニークな施設が点在しています。日本が高度経済成長を謳歌していた20世紀半ばごろ、大蔵山でも各地の石材需要に応えるために積極的に石の採掘を繰り返した結果、70年代には山肌はすっかり荒廃してしまいました。大蔵山はかつて、地元の方々にとって生活の糧となる山菜やキノコ、野生動物など自然の恵みが狩猟採取された豊かな里山でした。「この地をもう一度緑が溢れ、人々が集う場に」という思いの元、80年代に山の修景作業が始まりました。その後、ご縁をいただいた石彫家、建築家、そして地元の方々が加わり、大蔵山全体を創作の場と捉える壮大なスケールのプロジェクトへと発展していったのです。大切にしたのは、山の命である石を山の神様にお返しするために、その時採掘された最大級の石を残し、施設の中心に据えることでした。その後も試行錯誤を繰り返しながら、長い時をかけていくつもの文化施設を建ててまいりました。

Cultural facilities

There are many exceedingly unique facilities in Mt. Okurayama, in according to both design and concepts which are unlike anywhere else. During the rapid economic growth in mid 20th century in Japan, Okurayama studio had increased quarrying to meet the demand of the stone for architecture and infrastructure all over Japan, at last the land was devastated in the late 70’s. Once Mt. Okurayama was the blessed “ satoyama” with abundance of nature, like gathering wild vegetables, picking mushrooms, and hunting wild animals for those who lived leading their own lives.

In the 80’s, we started the restoration of the environment, with this idea ; “Make this place full of trees and green grasses, and people feeling like gathering here again.” The sculptors, architects, and neighbors joined this project, and it had grown to the great scale, which made our entire place to a canvas for creation. The philosophy of these projects was to remain the biggest Daté Kan Stone and set them in the middle of the buildings, in order to show the gratitude for the blessings the mountain has bestowed, so that the stone is the life of the mountain itself. Since then, we have constructed many cultural facilities with hard work over long period of time.

ロゴマークについて

中央の「うねり」はケルトやアイヌ民族など各地の意匠に見受けられ、大地から感じる巨大なエネルギーを表現しているといわれています。この「うねり」の周囲に六角堂（上）、石舞台野外劇場（右）、本社（下）、山堂サロン（左）のフォルムを配し、すべてがうねりから始まったことを表現したのが私たちのロゴです。また、大蔵山スタジオがこの大地のエネルギーを受け止め、創造性豊かな伊達冠石の製品を追求していく姿勢も表しています。

Logo

The swirling undulation in the middle of logotype is seen in many cultures such as the Celts and the Ainu people, representing the massive energy felt from the earth. Around this undulation, the form of hexagonal library (top), the Ishi Butai Stone Stage Outdoor Theater (right), the Head Quarter (bottom) and the Yamado Salon (left) are arranged, our company logotype indicates the undulation is the birth of everything. And also it shows that Okurayama Studio produces extremely creative stone products, receiving the energy from the earth.

The founder Chozo Yamada moved to Miyagi prefecture from Hyogo prefecture. He worked for the bridge retainer of the Ohashi Bridge at Aoba castle and Yodomibashi Bridge in Sendai city.

1892

The Ohashi Bridge was completed.

1925

Datekan stone started to be mined at Mt. Okura.

1932

The sudden death of 2nd generation, Choichi Yamada.

1956

The 3rd generation Masaichi Yamada took over the stone business.

1961

The company organization was established.

1964

The head office was moved to Kakuda city in southern Miyagi prefecture with large factory.

1970

Widely known sculptor, Isamu Noguchi had visited Mt.Okura to search the ideal stone for his works.

1982

Kizan Stone started to be mined at Shibayama in Iwaki city Fukushima prefecture.

1986

The 4th generation Masahiro Yamada took over the business.

1988

Creative preservation projects took place on Mt. Okura and the Stone Stage Outdoor Theater was constructed.

1999

A factory was constructed on Mt. Okura.

2005

The Yamado Salon was constructed.

2015

Opened a first exhibition at Gallery S.Bensimon in Paris.

2016

Datekan product designed by Dan Yeffet, from Paris, was presented at the Salone del Mobile Milano.

2017

Contemporary “Iwakura” structure completed.

Yamada Sekihan and Okurayama studio merged and unified the company under the name of [Okurayama studio Ltd,.]. The 5th generation Takasuke Yamada took over the business.
